Install Linux Mint 9
Linux Mint is a Linux distro aiming at being "out of the box". It has pre installed software such as Java Sun and Adobe Flash Player (they are not pre installed in Ubuntu).
You download Linux Mint from http://www.linuxmint.com/download.php.

Burn it do a cd/dvd following these instructions : https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto (when choosing the speed, choose as slow as possible).

or, create a bootable USB following these instructions: http://www.linuxliveusb.com/. After starting the Universal-USB-Installer, pick Linux Mint Gnome under ---Other Distros Alphabetical---. Check the box for formatting the drive.

or, borrow an USB-stick with Linux Mint from the Maths Department (assuming you are a student at Katedralskolan in Lund)
Install it!
Restart the computer and connect a network cable. Click on the Updates icon in the Panel.

Update the computer. Restart the computer when prompted to do so. Click on the Hardware Drivers icon to install hardware drivers. Activate the wireless Driver.
Unplug the network cable. Left-click on the network icon
to find a wireless network.
Get Started
You can find the Linux Mint menu in the lower left corner.

The pre installed Applications are arranged in groups: Accessories, Graphics, Internet,...
If you want to download other applications, most of them can be found using the Software Manager under System. (If not, the instructions for installation is usually given at the webb page of the software; you typically have to write a couple of commands in the terminal). See Get Software.
You can add an application to the Panel (at the bottom of the screen) by right-clicking on it and choose Add to panel.
Under System you can choose Control Center to change some general settings like Preferred Applications, Appearance (change the look of windows and the background), Screensaver, ...

Workspaces
In order to make the desktop easier to navigate you can arrange it into workspaces. Right-click on the Panel and choose Add to panel... Scroll down to Workspace Switcher.

You switch between workplaces by

clicking ctrl-alt-"left or right arrow"
-
dragging the workspace with the middle mouse button, or by holding down both mouse buttons

clicking at a workspace at the Workspace Switcher in the Panel
You can change the appearance of the workspaces to a cube in the Control Center. Pick CompizConfig Settings Manager; under Desktop check Desktop Cube and Rotate Cube.
